Somehow when I first start reading a book, I feel committed to it. Committed to read all of the story it holds and so I am found devoted to nearly every book I begin to read. There have been books that have been shelved due to inappropriate content. Perhaps My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult should’ve been shelved. The language was explicit. And the storyline compelling. I finished reading this book this evening and I ended it in tears. Picoult’s style of writing in this book is really quite interesting. The reader gets all the information from eight different characters. Each chapter indicates a different character and mingled in with real time are memories of the Fitzgerald family, the lawyer and the Guardien al Litem. So what’s the book about? The Fitzgerald family is a family of five. Two parents, one son and two daughters. When the first daughter (Kate) gets diagnoised with lukemia APL, the parents (Brian and Sara) decide to have a third child (Anna) who, with the help of geneticist, is the perfect donor match for her sister Kate. Brian and Sara love Anna and only intend for her to donate her cord blood, but it becomes so much more – blood transfusions, bone marrow and every other thing needed. Nearly every time Kate is in the hospital, Anna is landed there as well. When what’s needed is a kidney, the tables turn. Anna files a petition and gets a lawyer at age 13. This book really delves into what is right and what is wrong. And answers the question, “Am I my sister’s keeper?” in an unexpected way. Once again, I extend a warning: the language is really awful in some parts. It’s too bad because it really lowers the quality of writing. Fortunately for Picoult she’s a good writer, a New York Times bestselling author in fact.
