Okay this is going to be a weird blog. But funny, I promise. Conor has decided that cloth diapers are probably the most inexpensive route to go for when we have kids, which is important since we’re poor and by the time a baby comes along we’ll be even poor-er. So like I said, Conor came up with this fabulous idea to put our babies in cloth diapers. Oh how quickly he neglects that it’ll be I doing laundry every day cleaning up the nasty diapers so that they may be reusable. It’ll be I changing most of the diapers since he’s the “I’m sensitive to smell and will vomit” king. Ha! And then he comes up with the thought that it’ll be motivation for us to potty-train our kids, you know so we don’t have to change cloth diapers! Ha. Unfortunately kids like to do those things on their own schedules (just ask Liz). I will proudly state that I was potty-trained before the age of 2. Not at like one and half or anything drastic like that, but reasonably “early.” I totally think that cloth diapers is a great money-saving idea however it’s GOT to be natural for me to have reservations about it! I picture swirling a poopy bit of clothe around in the toilet as a pre-rinse. That in no way seems glamorous to me. Nope. That’s definitely not something a glam mum does. However, we shall cross that bridge when we get to it. And yes, Conor will change diapers… lots and lots of diapers. Just kidding, he’ll do it willingly I’m sure!!

27 Aug, 2007The homemade wipes soud good, I always used a warm washcloth – and yes we went through a lot! I agree with liz…Water cost, detergent, bleach, what if you don’t even have your own washer and dryer….
I did do the cloth diaper thing and believe me it doesn’t get them to potty train earlier. In fact i think that is why Kim trained later…she was used to that wet feeling and it didn’t bother her!
I think that i would try the “store brand” and see how they work, to save money. The name brands are definitly more expensive!
A diaper service may be cheeper than disposables, but you will still be using the disposables when you go out or to church.
I used disposable diaper liners to make clean-up easier for the poopy ones, but we all know about expolosive poopies and it isn’t nice.
Even using disposables, we still had a few of those “just put her in the bathtub and we will just shower her off” moments….thank heavens for shower heads that come with hose attached!
You may even say that cloth are “greener” than disposable…Energy used in heating the water, soap and phospherous into the water treatment plant, more energy used to dry the diapers…Green, smeen.
I think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other.

23 Aug, 2007Clothe diapers may be cheaper as far as up front obvious costs, however your watre bill will be higher witht he amount of laundry you will do becasue they leak! You will be goign through many more outfits in a day then you ever htought and washing nasty diapers! Just think more time swirling int he toilet or more time giving your baby love and attention for a small fee. Not to mention when you have nasty dirty diapers in public good luck carrying around that smell with ya all day!! I commend the thought, would love to see it happen, but I’ll believe then and only then! You may re think between now and then as you start to realize all the repercutions. But I do know of a great recipe for homemade wipes that I hear can save you a bundle and that i believe would be worth it!! Good luck!
