Conor and I both have a deep loving for clothing; shoes, pants, shirts… every aspect of clothing. I’m almost comfortable with the fact that Conor has more clothes than me. The only time I don’t like it is when I go to the closet to pick out a shirt and I have to push and shove to grab a top! Last night Conor and I flipped through his side of the closet and eliminated 15 shirts, half of which are collared shirts. Despite our valiant attempts the closet is still rather full. I have ideas of what I’m going to do with the shirts that are no longer wearable. The woven shirts I’ll use for quilts, etc and for the knit t-shirts I found this really great idea in my January Martha Stewart Living magazine. I’m going to make T-Shirt Shopping Bags. Should be cute.

What do you do with your clothes that aren’t being worn anymore? I know there’s the classic Good Will solution, but does anyone have any other nifty ideas?

Disclaimer: I regularly flip through my clothes and purge. A few shirts here and there really adds up!

Very cute- and fast -idea to make the t shirt shopping bags!

When we were young parents I cut down some of our clothing to make other clothing for Nathan as a little guy.  When Nathan was 2 I made cloth dolls with embroidered faces and yarn hair etc (still have the pattern!) for Nathan and his cousin Jacqueline.  Nathan’s was called George and was a big hit.

There are books out that show how to cut down adult clothing to make kids stuff or mens to women’s, but I haven’t tried it.  Of course there is the perennial favorite of a jean quilt.

I’ve always wanted to make a tshirt quilt from my boys’ favorite old tshirts.  Been collecting ‘em for awhile now.  If any favorites might be useful to add, please save or send them on to me /images/smileys/icon_smile.gif .

I am going to cover the fronts of evan’s plain white dressing drawers with Kent’s old blue stripe dress shirts. I’ve kinda done a mock up and it looks really cute!

Wow! Those are great ideas. Mom, I’ll look through the shirts and see if any are all time favourites. Liz, I totally want a photo when your done! Thanks!

Katie,
Congratulations on tackling the closet – it can be a daunting task if left too long.
Around our house, adult clothes are first sorted into those that can be re-made into something for the kids (my talented mother-in-law does this without the aid of any patterns), the next lot of adult clothes are items that are still good enough that someone less fortunate may benefit from their use without having to pay for them (coats, for example), then comes the stuff that we drop off at the local thrift shop and, finally, the stuff that becomes rags.
The kiddies’ old clothing is sent directly to the thrift shop with only a few exceptions (snow suits, boots, etc) that are given to the little guy next door. I do have several crates full of stufff from their younger days that I am holding for the day that I finally get around to making them each a quilt from their (my) favourite outfits.
If Conor has loads of button shirts, you may want to consider this project:

It almost makes me wish I had another little girl in the house.
Also, what about using some of the old fabric to make reusable gift bags? Sew a bag, add a pretty ribbon and voila!
Whatever you decide, I hope you’ll post pics!

I totally love that little girl dress. I’m excited to try it out! Thanks Tonya!

Wonderful dress idea Tonya!
